Chapter 44

Melissa wanted tequila, which is what we picked up, along with orange and lime juice. Her desire to drink margaritas until she felt numb. A sad state for her to be in, but I knew I’d be there to help her. Drowning in alcohol is not the best method to forget, but I was hoping to forget myself for at least a few hours.

When we walked into my apartment, I took her coat and hung it up. I gave her a quick tour, letting her know where the bathroom was, which she used. While she was gone, I mixed up a couple of drinks, making use of my blender, since I didn’t have a shaker in the apartment. The right amount of tequila, ice, orange, and lime juice, filled to the top line of the pitcher and blended. A master at making drinks, I tested my concoction and found it acceptable. I poured into two sixteen-ounce drinking glasses since I didn’t have a margarita party glass. Melissa walked into the kitchen.

“What are those two holes in the wall from?” she asked.

“My fists. An angry reaction to a call I received.” I handed her a glass. “Drinks are served, M’lady!”

She took a long sip and nearly finished all of it. “Tastes good, even with no salt. I hope there is more.” She held out the glass to me.

“I made a pitcher’s worth.” I pulled it out from the fridge and topped off her glass. “Shall we sit in the living room?”

Melissa took a seat on the sofa. “Sit with me and let’s talk.” She took another good-sized drink. It wouldn’t be long before she’d need another refill.

I did as I was told, keeping space between us. “What do you want to talk about?”

She still had the drink in her hand. She turned and crossed her legs to face me. “Anything to get my mind off what happened to Mirta. How have you been? It’s been so long since we’ve talked.”

I wanted to say I was good, but really, after the last few years, I wasn’t certain. A lot had happened, from the ups and downs at the tavern, to April leaving, to me getting back into the private eye game. I couldn’t say all was good, but I couldn’t say it was bad either, but landing somewhere in the middle.

“I’ve been busy, mostly. Keeping my mind occupied. Working hard at the tavern. Taking on a few cases here and there to make extra money.”

“Since April left, have you been seeing anyone?”

I could have brought up Catalina, or even Frieda. Both possibilities, though nothing yet had happened. “I haven’t been on any dates since she left.”

“Hard to believe, a good-looking man like yourself. Why not?”

“Too busy, I guess.”

Melissa finished her drink and handed me her glass. I went into the kitchen and poured her more. I put crackers and sliced cheddar cheese on a plate, and along with the pitcher, took them to the living room. I figured we needed a little food to balance the alcohol.
